Our journey to Western North Carolina (WNC) took us once again to Swannanoa—a community still reeling from recent devastation. This time, we didn’t just deliver supplies; we stayed to help alongside Generation Church, which has transformed itself into a much-needed distribution center for the community. The resilience and compassion we witnessed will stay with us forever.
A huge shout-out to Dakota Savage, who did an incredible job of organizing and coordinating efforts, uniting various groups to provide aid where it was needed most. We showed up as a team of 15 volunteers, but the need is immense, and more hands are always welcome.
Stories of Survival and Gratitude
The stories we encountered were heart-wrenching. One particularly chilling piece of information was that the local fire department and authorities requested over 2,000 body bags in anticipation of casualties. The scale of loss and devastation is hard to comprehend.
The aftermath is stark: the water remains contaminated; the mud and dust still coat homes and vehicles. An elderly woman, tears in her eyes, told me how half her house was destroyed and her basement completely flooded. Despite her loss, she was overwhelmed with gratitude to receive blankets, supplies, clean water, and a hot meal. Her thankfulness reminded us all why we were there—to bring hope, even if just a small spark.
A System of Support and “Organized Chaos”
At the distribution center, the process was both orderly and hectic—a sort of “organized chaos.” People in need would arrive, park their cars, and then join long lines for supplies. Each family received one cart of essentials. After checking out, they would return to their cars, where we’d help them load up with supplies.
Our volunteers stepped into various roles—some prepared hot meals, others managed check-ins and check-outs, while a few directed traffic and assisted with loading vehicles. Despite the chaos, patience prevailed on both sides—those receiving help and those giving it.
The Power of Community and Compassion
For me, this was a profound experience. Witnessing the strength and patience of this community, even amid hardship, was humbling. As the colder months approach, the need for supplies, shelter, and support will only grow. The risks will be higher, but so will the opportunities to make a difference.
I hope to continue contributing to these efforts—and I encourage others to join, whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading the word. In times like these, every hand, every kind word, and every bit of support matters.
Together, we can help rebuild lives and restore hope.

This post is truly inspiring—it beautifully highlights hope, resilience, and the strength of community.
Thank you so much for your kind words! It’s incredible to see how hope and resilience can shine through when a community comes together. Stories like these remind us of the power of unity and compassion. Your comment means a lot!
